Roy T. Woods, 99, of Memphis, Missouri died October 29, 2009 at the Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis. He was born January 11, 1910 near Crawford Station in Scotland County Missouri to Stacy Alvin and Louella Donaldson Woods, one of thirteen children. He attended Dover Grade School in rural Scotland County. Roy was a member of the Crawford Christian Church.
On March 18, 1930, Roy married Daisy Piper. They lived on a farm where two children were born: Lou Jean and Roy Junior. In July, 1949, the family left the farm and moved to Raton, New Mexico where Roy joined a construction team using his carpenter talents. They returned to Scotland County in October of 1949 and he became engaged in farming and carpenter work.
After 52 years of marriage, Daisy died in May 1982. He then married Georgia Baker in November, 1982 and they made their home in Memphis.
Roy enjoyed going to the Nutrition Center, playing cards, riding his exercise bike and playing pool. He also continued doing woodworking projects that were primarily limited to carving name blocks for all of his family and many friends. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren grow and mature.
Roy moved to an apartment at the Residential Terrace after Georgia entered the care center. Georgia died in October 1999.
He entered the Scotland County Care Center June 28, 2004.
Survivors include his daughter, Lou Jean Simmons, of Oakbrook, Illinois; his son, Roy Junior Woods and his wife, Phyllis, of Ottumwa, Iowa; four grandchildren: Teresa Posthumus, Cheryl Maddox and her husband, David, Lisa Woods and Pam Simmons; five great-grandchildren; five great great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Eugene Piper of Arbela, Missouri and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wives, three sisters, nine brothers and a grandson, Don Simmons.
A graveside memorial service will be held Thursday, November 12, 2009 at 10:30 AM, followed by burial of cremains at the Memphis Cemetery with Brother Jack Sumption officiating.
