Pamela K. Barnes, 63, of Memphis, Missouri died October 21, 2009 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois. She was born at Ottumwa, Iowa to Orville Walter and Edith Louise Nydle Allender on August 3, 1945. Educated in the Ottumwa schools, she was a member of the Class of 1964, Ottumwa High School. She received her Associate of Arts Degree from Ottumwa Heights College in Ottumwa, May 1966 and was a graduate of the Ottumwa School of Medical Technology – Ottumwa Hospital. She received her B. A. degree from the University of Iowa February 1969. Pam worked in the laboratory at Ottumwa Hospital and at St. Joseph Hospital in Centerville, Iowa before coming to work at Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Missouri in 1970. In March of 1991 she became the Clinical Laboratory Manager and has continued in that position until her death.
On January 22, 1977 she married Tommy Lewis Barnes at Ottumwa, Iowa. He preceded her in death January 11, 1996
Pam loved animals of all kinds and would put out food for them near a reflecting pool in her back yard. She enjoyed watching them come up to eat from her kitchen window. Visiting with friends she told of watching; deer, coyotes, raccoons, possum, and skunks as well as many stray cats. One of her best friends was a rat terrier, Whizzy which her husband Tom gave her. After Whizzy died Pam acquired another rat terrier and named her Lizzy.
Survivors include two step-sons; Tommy Lowell Barnes of Clatskanie, Oregon and Michael Andrew Barnes of Rainier, Oregon; three step-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Allender and his wife Sharon of Ottumwa, Iowa and two nieces:Lori Lea Kinsella of Grimes, Iowa and Gina Lynn Owen and husband Bruce of Clive, Iowa and a nephew Robin Scott Allender and wife Deborah of Kansas City, Missouri and six great nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Memphis Funeral Home starting with a reception-visitation at 1:00 PM on Sunday, November 8th and concluding with a memorial service at 2:00 PM, conducted by Pastor Dan Hite. Vocalist will be Schelle Cooley with Ann Luther accompanist. Burial of cremains will be in Cuba Cemetery near Avery, Iowa.
Memorials are suggested to the Scotland County Cancer Fund or the Missouri Humane Society. They may be left at the funeral home or mailed to 378 South Market St. Memphis, Missouri 63555.
