Dwaine E. Werts. 80, of Punta Gorda, Florida and formerly of Bloomfield, Iowa died Saturday, June 14, 2008 at Punta Gorda, Florida.
He was born October 25, 1927, at Osceola, Missouri, the son of Walter G. and Dessa Putman Werts and the youngest of five children.
He moved to Bloomfield, Iowa in 1938 and was a graduate of Bloomfield High School, Class of 1946. He was a WWII veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy as a Dental Tech 2nd Class from May 31, 1946 until his discharge on may 25, 1949. Following discharge, he attended the University of Iowa for two years.
He married Sally Fellinger on November 25, 1951 at the Methodist Church in Bloomfield, Iowa. They later divorced. Dwaine and Coe Travis were married on July 2, 1987 at the Thomas A. Edison Congregational Church in Fort Myers, Florida.
Dwaine joined his father and brother in the Werts Welding business in Bloomfield in January, 1950. In 1949 Werts Welding entered into the structural steel business with the present Bloomfield newspaper building as its first job. Over the years they were involved in many consruction jobs in southeast Iowa including Union Carbide Co., Centerville, Iowa; John Deere Ottumwa Works, John Morrell & Company and Rex Chain, all in Ottumwa, Iowa; Firestone Company in Des Moines, Iowa and many schools, hospitals, churches, government buildings and bridges. In September of 1962 they moved to a new building located at 919 West Chestnut Street. The partnership of W. C. Werts and D. E. Werts was established in January, 1957. In May, 1971, Werts Corporation obtained a patent on a dozer blade and began manufacturing and distributing this product throughout the United States. Dwaine retired in 1995.
He was a member of the Bloomfield United Methodist Church. He served four years on the Bloomfield City Council and was a member of the Bloomfield Country Club. Dwaine and his three golf partners, Bob Miller, Bud Leon and the late Ron Dabney played in the Men's League for twenty years.
Survivors include his wife, Coe Werts, of Punta Gorda, Florida; two daughters: Terry Cernoch and her husband, Bill, of Terrell, Texas; Laura Werts and her huisband, Keith Woerner, of Punta Gorda, Florida and a step daughter, Maricoe Proctor and her husband, Scott, of Kirksville, Missoiuri. Also surviving are six grandchildren, four great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Dwaine was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters: Dorotha Widener and Doris Harl and two brothers: Carhyle Werts and Gordon Werts.
A reception for relatives and friends will be held Monday, June 30, 2008 at the Bloomfield Country Club at 1 P.M. followed by "A Celebration of Life" at 2 P.M. at the Country Club with Reverend Jackie Perry officiating.
Burial of cremains will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Bloomfield, with graveside military honors accorded by the Reed-Whisler Post #78 American Legion.
Relatives and friends are invited to return to the Country Club or remain for a time of sharing of memories.
